Bar Ceremony Held for New Attorneys

Newly admitted Missouri Bar Members had an opportunity to be sworn into the Western and Eastern Districts of the Federal Court on May 1, 2009.

The ceremony was held in the House Chambers of the Missouri State Capitol Building, and Honorable Nanette K. Laughrey welcomed 51 new members into the Western District. The next joint bar ceremony is scheduled for Thursday, September 17, 2009.

Central Division

Forty individuals from 25 different countries finalized the requirements for American citizenship as they were administered the Oath of Allegiance in Jefferson City on May 8, 2009. Judge Nanette Laughrey presided over the patriotic ceremony which included a presentation of the flag by Boy Scout Troop #11. The scouts also led the new citizens in the pledge of allegiance which was followed by the National Anthem sung by Sarah Light, a high school student from Blair Oaks High School in Wardsville, Missouri.

Carrie James administered the oath. The Eldon Chapter, Daughters of the American Revolution handed each new citizen a small American flag and pin and assisted in providing the new citizens the opportunity to register to vote. A reception for the new citizens and their families was sponsored by the Cole County Bar Association following the ceremony.

Southern Division

Applicants for American citizenship were administered the Oath of Allegiance in Springfield on June 5, 2009. Judge Richard Dorr presided over the ceremony and the Introduction of Applicants was made by Kathleen Schley, District Adjudications
for Citizenship Officer, US Citizenship and Immigration Services. Speakers included Staff Representatives from the offices of U.S. Senators Kit Bond and Claire McCaskill, and Congressman Roy Blunt. Wallace Squibb, President, Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association, Ilga Vise, League of Women Voters, and Jim O’Neal, Mayor, Springfield, Missouri also spoke. Steve Burch administered the oath.

A reception for the new citizens and their families was sponsored by the Springfield Metropolitan Bar Association following the ceremony.
